Welcome...

to kindergarten! My name is Miss Hanna and I am so excited to have your student this year! We have lots of fun and exciting things on our agenda for this year and I would love for you to have a special part in it. Below, there are several aspects on the teacher's page to allow you to do so. I have briefly explained each beneficial feature to this page and how it works. Check it out!

  • Biography: Meet me and get to know me a little more. Here you can find information about my life and my journey to becoming a teacher.
  • Class Directory: Meet the students in the class and seek contact information. I highly encourage student-to-student interaction outside of the classroom. Here is an easy way to access and contact other students.
  • Homework: At the close of the school day I will update the homework section of the page to show the current homework and when it is due. Students are aware of the homework assigned and our required to record them in their assignment notebooks each day. I also will list any reminders such as field trip information or other due dates under this section.
  • Learning Activities: Here you will find some beneficial activities for you and your child. I realize your schedules may be intensely busy, but I highly encourage you to try these activities with your child as often as you can. These activities are designed as either an extension of what we do in class or new ideas to contribute to their learning experience. If you find these activities are not best suited for you and your child, please contact me and I can provide a better suited set of activities or additional resources upon request. Also, website links are provided to more educational sites for activities and games.
  • Parent Involvement/Volunteer: Interested in volunteering for an activity or becoming involved in the classroom? Check this section for updated events and other opportunities to become involved.
  • Calendar: Periodically I update the kindergarten calendar. Here you will find many dates for holidays, winter/spring breaks, no school days, and other fun events going on at school.

Hello and welcome! My name is Nicole Hanna and I am your student's kindergarten teacher for the 2011-2012 school year. I graduated from Illinois State University class of 2011 with a Bachelor's in Science in Elementary Education. In addition, I have obtained endorsements in Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science. This is my first year teaching, so I am very excited! My other experiences as a pre-service teacher include age groups ranging from Pre-K to 10th grade. Kindergarten has become my favorite age group to work with. During these years, each child's brain acts like a sponge. I enjoy watching all of the "ah-ha" and "light bulb" moments children experience every day.

I reside in South Elgin with my two year old Doberman, Gotti. I enjoy reading, listening to music, watching movies, exercising, being outdoors, traveling, and spending time with my friends and family. I am also very involved with my community. I volunteer my spare time by meeting with my book club once a week. I, along with ten other mother-daughter pairs, meet Wednesday nights to read and discuss the current book we are using. This is a very fun and exciting way to have parents involved and have students get excited for reading. In addition, I also coach the a high school cheerleading squad year round and am an active participant in the Booster's Club. I thoroughly enjoy being involved in my schools and community.

I care about each and every one of my students deeply, and also care about my students' parents and guardians. I would like to establish an open line of communication, so please feel free to contact me via phone or email at any time with questions or concerns regarding your child. My ultimate goal is to help your child learn, grow, and succeed in a safe and engaging environment. If there is any way I can achieve this, please do not hesitate to contact me. I can be contacted via phone at 847-555-1000 x0817 or email at nlhanna@ilstu.edu

Learning Activities

Below are a variety of activities to strengthen your student's academic skills. If you are unsure on a specific activity, have questions regarding your child or the activities, or have suggestions, please share them with me.
  • Addition Facts: Currently we are studying our single-digit addition facts. These include adding two numbers from 0-9. For example, 1 + 2 = 3. We use counters at school to show a physical representation; which is easier for most students. You can use any amount of objects such as coins, pencils, goldfish crackers, etc. Be creative and do what is convenient for you!
  • Sight Words: Sight words are common words that are found in several sentences in stories and books. These are important for students to learn and recognize at the early stages of reading. Some sight words include: I, like, see, the, a, can, me, be, yes, no, one, two, you, red, cat, dog, to, fun, it, and, come, go, is, look, up, at, play, are. You can write words on flashcards or pieces of paper and ask your child to read them.
  • Writing: We are still working on writing our letters and numbers. We use the D'Nealian style in kindergarten and often practice on lined education paper. Below is a link that shows examples of the style. Encourage students to try their best when writing their numbers and letters. Once they have mastered that, have them practice writing the common sight words listed above, their name, or a friend's or family member's name. I have lined education paper available for your use as requested.
  • Reading: Most students struggle with reading and get frustrated in the process. Find books that spark their interest such as books about dogs, princesses, trucks, soccer, etc. Each book in their book bags are for their appropriate level. The books at book stores or libraries also have the levels for easy finding and access.
  • Partner Reading: Students mimic what they see, so it is no surprise that they will try and pick up habits they see their parents, siblings, and guardians doing. By doing partner reading, it encourages students to read and mimic those habits. For example, when reading a story take turns reading each page. This allows the process to be more enjoyable for the student.

Parent Involvement/Volunteer

I encourage parent involvement in my classroom. Below are some dates that I will need volunteers and other activities where you can get involved! I will update the lists as soon as I get more information on opportunities.

In the classroom:
-12/16: Field trip to the planetarium. I am interested in three chaperons to accompany us on the trip. We will be gone from 9:30am to 12pm.
-2/14: Valentine's Day party from 12pm-2pm. Come join us for some fun crafts, games, and other excitement.
-Literacy Groups: Twice a week I am interested in recruiting one to three parents from 9-9:30am. In these groups volunteers will work with small groups of children on their literacy skills.

Other events:
-PTO meetings in the school library every third Wednesday of the month from 6-7pm.
-Family Fun Night on 1/17 from 6-7:30pm. The school is looking for volunteers to operate food and game stands. All families are welcome to come!
